Gormanston Signal Cabin
Sunday 15th August 1999: After an early 5am start and a journey time of just over seven
hours the Gormanston Signal Cabin arrived in Dromod, along with the cabin's 24-lever signal
frame. The reason for such an early start was because we had to work in between trains which
commenced running for the day at 9am and run at regular 30 minute intervals.
The cabin, which weighs approximately 7½ tons was transported from North Dublin on a low loader and passed through several towns with a Garda escort and even the M50 toll bridge was closed to traffic while we crossed. Upon arrival at Dromod the cabin was let down beside our track. Here it will be restored and the signal frame will eventually be used to operate the track points and signals on the site.
Volunteers
The winter/spring season may not be a busy time for the railway, as regards visitors, but there
are many tasks that need to be done. Hedges, bushes, trees and briars need to be cut back, the
GNR railcar trailer is in need of a coat of paint, fences need to be repaired and maintence needs
to be carried out on the Steam Engine. These are to name but a few.
